The Thornfalcon Guide to Lyme Regis

The picturesque coastal town of Lyme Regis is 40 mins south of Thornfalcon, on the Jurassic Coast– and one of our favourite places.

Beloved for its beauty, charm, literary connections and fossil heritage, these picturesque winding streets were the home of Mary Anning, one of history’s most important fossil collectors and palaeontologists.

Lyme has featured in a range of books and films, from Jane Austen’s Persuasion, to Wonka and the French Lieutenant’s Woman, and has something for everyone – from great food and independent shops to beautiful beaches and fishing trips in the bay.

Lunch on local seafood at chef and food writer Mark Hix’s first restaurant, the Oyster & Fish House, overlooking the Cobb, or fish and chips on the beach (beware the swooping seagulls).

If you’re with the family, afternoon mini golf in Lister Gardens overlooking the Cobb, followed by a trip to the Marine Aquarium where fish eat out of your hand and possibly a mackerel fishing trip out in the bay

Wander through the winding streets and charming shops of old Lyme Regis – favourites include The Sanctuary Bookshop, a labyrinth of bookshelves, art and antiques; Ryder & Hope, a stylish homeware and slow living shop with its range of beautiful design-led products and independent makers; and Lyme Regis’ famous 16th century fudge shop at the bottom of town.
